How to choose the perfect hiking pack?

Avid hikers know that much of the success of their journeys depends on the perfect backpack. Experienced hikers know that to avoid serious injury it is of the most importance to find a pack that fits correctly and is made of high quality materials. Whether you are going on a day hike or a steep trek up a long mountain, it is critical to choose the appropriate pack. The following are some guidelines to aid you on your search.

Before you can choose a bag, you must first be aware of the size of bag you require. These are some basic guidelines:
• Day hikes or single-night trips – 2,500 to 3,000 cubic inches
• 2- to 3-day trips – 3,000 to 5,000 cubic inches
• Extended trips up to 6 days – 5,000 plus cubic inches
Remember to only pack the essentials. You will be carrying everything you want on your back. Choose wisely and think minimal.

Most of the criteria for a good pack boils down to the perfect fit. How do you know you have the perfect fit? Here are some basics:
• Hipbelt. The hipbelt is the part of the pack that will absorb the largest portion of the pack’s weight. Experts suggest that your hipbelt cup over your hips to allow for appropriate weight distribution. Avoid packs with foam cushion because they are likely to loose buoyancy after a few miles into the hike. Packs which are too hard will bruise your hips. Choose a pack made with high quality materials. This will cost more but the product is perfectly justified.
• Shoulder Straps. Again avoid a cheep version. Avoid straps that are too soft. Get straps that are solid without any puckers. The puckers are what cause blisters and rash.
• Back Panel. It will be a negative experience if your back is wet with sweat. Too much padding can result in a soggy mess. Many pack constructors have done away with the back padding. Some companies have chosen materials that are porous to soak up sweat. If you opt for a back pack without padding, just be sure to load soft items against your back.
• An Internal-Frame pack or an External Frame pack? Internal-frame packs are tight fitting and flexible. These packs are ideal for hikes off-trail and easy movement. These packs are suggested for more experienced hikers. An External Frame pack is good for beginning hikers. It is ideal for heavy loads and is often the pack of choice.

Choosing the perfect backpack may seem simple enough but has proven to be a challenge. You need a pack that fits correctly. Choose quality over cost. Once you have chosen a pack that is appropriate for your activity and budget, remember that you need to pack that backpack. Distribute the weight but attempt to keep liter objects toward the bottom of the pack. If you can follow these guidelines, your hiking experience can be on its way to perfection.
