Essential Hiking Gear
Whether you are going on a day hike or summating a mountain, it is important and life saving to have the proper equipment with you. The following are a list of items that most experts agree will make your hike and you safer:
• MAP. You should always carry a map of your hiking destination whether you feel you know the trail or not. Many situations can occur that may require a shorter route, finding cover and other occurrences. It is advised that the map be a topographic map that is water proof and kept in a water proof container.
• COMPASS. Each hiker should carry his/her own compass incase of separation. It is important to know how to use a compass. There are orienteering classes available that will teach you the proper techniques and what types of objects can interfere with the compass and cause you to be in a dangerous situation. Unless you are experienced with a compass, it is suggested you get a basic compass, not a more technologically advanced model with a flip screen.
• POCKET KNIFE. This tool has several uses when out hiking. Experts suggest a Swiss Army style knife with a three inch blade. They also suggest that you carry this item with you and not in your pack.
• WHISTLE. A whistle is an essential survival tool. It can be used to alert animals of your presence. The sound of a whistle carries further than the human voice and can be a valuable asset if you are finding yourself lost.
• FLASHLIGHT. You never know when unexpected delays will occur while hiking. It is wise to carry a flashlight or a headlamp with you at all times. Remember to bring extra batteries and keep the batteries dry.
• FIRST AID KIT. A first aid kit is a basic idea that is a must have for a hiking trip. Basic first aid kits should include: band-aids of various sizes, antiseptic wipes, sting relief, burn cream, cotton balls, sterile pads, gauze, tape, pain reliever, Benadryl (oral form), mole skin for blisters, latex gloves and tweezers. Many stores offer these basic kits at a reasonable price in a water proof container.
• EXTRA FOOD AND WATER. Due to unforeseeable situations it is always wise to have extra sources of food and water. Some examples of food that will give you life sustaining nutrients are beef jerky, nuts, dried fruit, granola and energy bars. These items are small and will fit easily into a day pack.
• A GOOD DAY PACK. The pack you use to store your supplies in should be sturdy and reliable. Do not skimp and get the cheapest bag because this bag is holding the essential equipment that can save your life. It is wise to get a bag that is water resistant. Remember to distribute your items carefully in your back and don’t have objects sticking into your back that could cause blisters or abrasion.
Hiking is an exciting sport that many active people appreciate and enjoy. Having a daypack packed with these essential items can ensure a safer and more enjoyable hiking experience.
